Cub Scout Basics

What is a...?

Lion A scout in kindergarten (or 6 years old) who is introduced to Scouting through monthly activities with a parent or other adult partner based on the 5 Lion adventures. Lion den meetings are initially organized by Lion den leaders and run by parents on a rotating basis. Lions meet once per month.

Tiger A scout in first grade (or 7 years old) who is working to complete the 6 required and 1 elective adventures in the TIGER BOOK to earn the Tiger Badge and rank. Tiger meetings are led by the Tiger den leaders with the assistance of parents. Our Tiger den meets twice per month.

Wolf A scout who has completed first grade (or is 8 years old) and is working to complete the 6 required and 1 elective adventures in the WOLF BOOK to earn the Wolf Badge and rank.

Bear A scout who has completed second grade (or is 9 years old) and is working to complete the 6 required and 1 elective adventures in the BEAR BOOK to earn the Bear Badge and rank.

Webelo A scout who has completed third grade (or is 10 years old) and is working to complete adventures in the WEBELOS BOOK to earn his Webelos pins and badges. Webelos is a two-year program. Scouts who complete the Webelos program earn the Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouts.

Den Meeting A group of Cub Scouts is called a den. The group gathers at a Den meeting one or two times a month for games, activities and projects geared toward completing the requirements needed to earn badges. (Lion and Tiger dens may meet less frequently than some of the older ranks.) The meeting is under the supervision of the den leader and one other adult (either a Co-Leader, Assistant Den Leader or a parent volunteer) and normally lasts 60 -75 minutes. Individual den leaders will plan the meetings and other activities for the den.

Pack Meeting A group of dens is called a Pack. Once a month all the dens gather for the pack meeting - an evening of games, awards and activities centered on a monthly theme. This meeting also serves as a showcase for den activities. An adult family member must accompany the Scout. Siblings may attend and are encouraged under the guidance/supervision of a parent. The pack meeting is under the leadership of the Cubmaster and normally lasts about an hour to an hour and a half. Pack 22 typically meets on the last Tuesday of every month.

Planning Meeting The adult volunteers holding leadership positions comprise the Pack Committee. This committee meets frequently and invites all parents to attend and participate in planning pack activities. Time is also allocated to budget review, fundraising goals, training needs, Scout achievements and awards and special events.

Family Outing Throughout the year, all Cub Scouts and their families participate in fun activities, which promote and strengthen family and pack ties. Depending on the outing, the pack may pay the admission charges for all attending Scouts or may ask participants to help cover the cost of the event.

Summer Camp Annually in July our council offers a 4 day 3 night Summer Camp for Parents and Scouts to attend together. Information is typically available in February.
